Women in the Garden

If you only thought that the great gardens and landscaping designs of the world were the works of such men as Capability Brown in England and Frederick Law Olmsted in the United States, you are in for a surprise when you read Long Island Landscapes and the Women Who Designed Them.

The revelations in this wonderful book will astonish you as they did the author, Cynthia Zaitzevsky, while she was conducting research for her book.

"Astonishingly, records show that half of the private gardens laid out on Long Island during the Golden Age of country homes (ca. 1890-1940), and even a few significant public landscapes, were designed by women who - for the first time - hung out their shingles and made their mark in a profession heretofore reserved to men."

If the names Beatrix Jones Farrand, Ellen Biddle Shipman, Ruth Bramley Dean and several others are unfamiliar to you, they won't be after you read about them and the gardens they designed in this extensively illustrated book.
