2010 Long Island Reads: The River of Doubt

The 2010 Long Island Reads pick is in!
The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey by Candice Millard

In 1912, Theodore Roosevelt failed to win a third term as U.S. President. To raise his spirits, he decided to take a "vacation" with his son - a trip down a dangerous, uncharted river in the Amazon called "The River of Doubt". In this fascinating debut, historian and National Geographic contributor, Candice Millard turns the incredible true story of Teddy Roosevelt's South American adventure, that almost killed him, into one that easily matches an Indiana Jones movie.

Why The River of Doubt?
Theodore Roosevelt was born in New York City and lived on Long Island from 1885, until his death in 1919 at Sagamore Hill. The book covers a part of his life that is both fascinating and not well known. This book will appeal to readers of American history, Long Island history, American presidents, adventure stories and travel narratives. This book is available in several formats from your Library.

Long Island Reads, in its 9th year, takes place annually throughout the month of April, and during National Library Week (April 11-17, 2010).

Long Island Reads will be sponsoring two author events on Tuesday, April 13, 2010. Candice Millard will be appearing at Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library from 10 am - 12 noon, and at Riverhead Free Library from 1:30 - 3:30 pm. Books will be available for purchase and signing at both events.
