Just the Facts Book Discussion - November 17, 2011

Thanks to the eleven people who braved a truly nasty evening to show up last night.
Our book was Born to Run: a hidden tribe, super athletes, and the greatest race the world has never seen. The book is an exploration of the world of ultra-marathoners, a tribe of indigenous people in Mexico whose culture is built around long distance running and, most importantly, the role that running played in the evolution of human beings and society. The author, Christopher McDougall, builds his book around a cast of eccentric athletes, scientists and a reclusive madman with a dream named Caballo Blanco. The author covers many topics including athletics, anthropology, biology, evolution and much more. Our discussion last night was just as varied and quite lively. We spoke about the book, of course, but also our own experiences of going barefoot, high heels versus flats, the size of our butts, exercise, persistence hunting and Mexico. Some people, myself included, enjoyed the book very much, although I thought it would have been helped by photographs and an index. Others found it repetitive and suited to a magazine article than a book. All agreed that the author presented new and interesting theories from experts about people and running and running’s role in human history and evolution.

Our next book, Bill Bryson’s At Home: a short history of private life, will be discussed on Thursday, December 22, 2011 at 7:00pm. The book is available at the Circulation desk. Happy Thanksgiving to all.
