Just the Facts: Book Discussion Recap from May 28

It took its time coming but, at last, spring has arrived. Many thanks, as always, to the people who passed on an evening outdoors to attend the book discussion last night.

Our book last night was The Aviators: Eddie Rickenbacker, Jimmy Doolittle, Charles Lindbergh, and the Epic Age of Flight by Winston Groom. The book is a triple biography of three men who pioneered the growth of the aviation industry in the United States, greatly advanced the art of flying and fought in and helped to win two world wars. It is also a story of political controversy, heartbreak, friendship, faith and courage that borders on the unbelievable. These men were, simply, true American heroes. Our conversation was widespread and involved the entire group. Topics we discussed included the rapid progress of aviation (from Kitty Hawk to the moon in less that seventy years), fearlessness and courage, the survival instinct in extreme situations, Philip Roth’s novel The Plot Against America (Lindbergh becomes President in 1940 and makes a deal with Hitler), the fear of chaos, the progress of technology and much more. The book and the evening discussing it were both more than satisfying.

Our next meeting will be on Thursday, June 25, 2015 at 7:00 pm. The book to be discussed, Blackett’s War: the men who defeated the Nazi U-boats and brought science to the art of warfare by Stephen Budiansky, is available at the Circulation Desk. All are welcome.
