Title: The Senator's Wife
Author: Sue Miller
Review: This novel was a great read. It is about two very different women, who live side-by-side in a townhouse. Delia is 74 and is married to "The Senator" and Meri is 36, newly married and expecting a baby. Delia has a calming affect on Meri who seems out of control over the pregnancy and the baby-to-be. She has no confidence in her ability to be both a wife and mother. Delia helps Meri get through those nine long months of pregnancy and becomes kind of surrogate mother to Meri after Asa is born. While Delia's marriage was over years ago, she and the Senator never divorced and have stayed on good terms over the years. The Senator, Tom Naughton, has had multiple affairs over the years. Delia and Tom lead separate lives, but, continue to love one another through it all and get together every so often for a romantic interlude. After the Senator suffers a major stroke, Delia insists that once he is released from the hospital she will take care of him at her home.
This novel shows how two very different women cope with the challenges that each face over the years and how very much they pull each other through these difficult times. Although Delia is a senior citizen and Meri is a young mother their lives seem to somehow parallel each other.
I would have given this book a 5, but, I disliked the structure of the book.
Rating: 3 out of 5
