This month our book discussion leader Donna Diamond has chosen The City of Falling Angels, a work of non-fiction by John Berendt.
Contemporary Venice and a fire at La Fenice Opera House is at the center of all the action. Berendt's Venice is a city of dreams where everybody plays a role and what seems real or true may not necessarily be so. Along the way, the author gives us a few facts about Venice that you may or may not know:
- Venice has the cleanest air of any city because there are no cars and methane gas which burns cleanly is used for heating.
- It is also the quietest city with a sound level of 32 decibels, while for the average city it is 45 decibels, again because of the absence of vehicular traffic.
- There are approximately 450 bridges in the city of Venice.
- During the occupation of Venice Napoleon razed to the ground 176 religious buildings, 80 palaces along with their decorations and art treasures and his agents confiscated 12,000 paintings and sent them to Paris where they now reside in the Louvre.
- And where did the author get the title of his book? Pick up a copy of The City of Falling Angels at the Circulation Desk and join our book discussion to find your answer.
